This is the second year I have run this race and I love it. the only disappointing for me was that there was no one else in our category to race against so it made it harder to stay motivated throughout the day. The course is fun and well marked. I can understand the disappointment in the race kit but how many cheap t shirts do you really need? I still haven't worn last years. What this race needs is more competitors. I hope it sticks around to build a bigger base. With more competitors the prizing will surely get better. The solo categories this year were the only categories with any real competition so it makes sense they got the prizing. Also this year there was no charity partner attached to the event so it was not quite as big. This would be a great opportunity for a charity to jump in a partner up to breathe new life into this race and draw in more runners.
The first big disappointment about this race was the fact that this year they decided to not provide race shirts (The bike race they hosted the day before had shirts).
The race 'kit' consisted of some ground coffee. Nothing else.
There was no photographer on course, no pictures at all were taken of the runners.
There was no food or water provided (except water e-load at the 2k/4k mark of the race). Anything else you wanted had to be purchased.
The course was fairly well marked, but a few people did get off-track due to a few unmarked corners.
Metals were given to the top finishers, but only the soloists received a gift. The team winners received only a metal.
In the past this race has been a huge success, with shirts, vendors, photographers and people that ran it in the past raving about it. What happened this year? Without some major changes, I would not consider running this event again.
After having done this format of racing many times on a bike it was great to do it in a run. The course was challenging but a distance that it was not overwhelming for beginners, and experienced runners could hammer out multiple laps. As it was a TREAD (Chico) event it was well marked, tremendously organized with a fun, competitive and supportive atmosphere. I wish there was more of these types of races around. Also having it the day after the Epic 8 bike race makes for an Epic weekend of racing. This will certainly be an annual tradition for Team Speed.
