If you like bling bling , this is the medal to own . Having it at the science centre was perfect . Plenty of parking or transit. Plenty of goodies and treats . Great course and costumes for prizes. Very well done . Great job to the people running the monster dash . Can’t wait for monster dash 2018 to see what medal they design!
This is definitely a fun run! A few people running for best time, however the majority of the participantscoming out for the event are here to enjoy the costumes. I was smiling the entire run!
What a great night!!! It's great to have an excuse to dress up as an adult and have some fun. Did the 10K with my girlfriend and a friend and we just cruised along and enjoyed the scenery. Volunteers were awesome and the after race snacks were yummy. The only criticism I have is that water should be available at some point in the 10K run. Overall I had a great time and will be back again next year.
Oh and the medal was AWESOME!!!
First year running in Monster Dash! Loved seeing so many people in costumes! The 5K route was easy to follow and it was the perfect time to start as most of the racers finished as it started to get really dark.
The party room at the Science Centre was great...with no shortage of snacks and drinks.
However, there were a couple of misses in the day. It seemed like quite a few of the volunteers were overwhelmed and didn’t have correct information. Bag check was rather disorganized - there were no zip tags for bib numbers and bags seemed to be getting piled all over.
Overall, the fun atmosphere made the evening and I’ll probably race with the Monsters again next Hallowe’en!
The Toronto Monster Dash is one of the best fun runs in the city. The creativity put into the costumes is absolutely brilliant and theres a real sense of community amongst the runners. The spooky Halloween atmophere and costume competitions were awesome. Its a beautiful course, especially in the fall. The coffin medals are the coolest that I’ve seen yet. The money raised went to a great cause and as always, Tony did a great job MCing the event. My only critique is that the pizza was late and I had to line up multiple times to get some. Im sure they will figure that glitch out for next year. Overall, I had a blast!
Great location. Great course. I had a fantastic time seeing all the costumes. The medal AMAZING, the swag bag was super and the pre and post race party was so much fun.
It would have been nice to have at least 1 water station on the 5k. Maybe at the half way point.
I will definitely be attending next year!! Thanks for a great day !!
Great night! This was my 2nd Monster Dash - the venue was a big improvement over last year. Very well run with a ton of great costumes! I'll definitely be back.
Pros: Medal was awesome! Thanks for that. And food was great.
Cons: According to my watch, it was only 4.82 K—a little disappointing. Also, seemed rather disorganized at the finish...not too many volunteers.
Great Race Only complaint is there were no water stations along the 10K route
What fun! Great goodie bag, race swag (blanket) and the bling. Oh, the Bling! What a FAB medal! It is nicely detailed and a great size (some of the medals are way too huge these days...).
The event was very nicely done. Having the pre-race and post-race party inside was excellent. Location was great, parking good. Very nice size of crowd. Races were well attended, yet not crammed with runners. The kids Spooky Mile was great fun and lots and lots of costumes for all races. The race course was well marked and having course mashalls at the crucial points was superb. Timing was good too - I did the 5K and it wasn't totally dark by the time we were done, which was nice.
It would have been nice to have one water station at the halfway mark of the 5K, although I wasn't desperate. I expect the 10K folks would have liked one (maybe there was?)
Bravo Monster Dash! This was my first Dash and I expect to attend again.
What a great time had by all. Very well organized and lots of fun. Also perfect venue and course. Thank you so much. We will definitely participate again next year
Fabulous race! This was my second time running the race and first time at the Science Centre. Great route and lots of very creative costumes. I'll be back :)
my number one reason for running well organized race:
- awesome award
- great swag bag
- Good after party with pizza
- family friendly with tons of fun and everyone dressed in costumes
I will be back next year.
Loved seeing all the amazing costumes. Good times had by all!
What a well organized event! Loved the course but next time I would make sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp.
There was no water stations on the course so if you like to have water male sure to bring your own.
Best goodie bag of all races! Thanks Amsterdam brewery for a can of my fave blond ))
Lots of amazing costumes on the race this year
A fun themed race in Sunnybrook park. I enjoyed the out and back Trail in the twilight, and the pizza at the end was very welcomed!
We had such a great time! Always a good time when you are running with friends. We loved the course, but it was a bit too dark in places and a bit unnerving when you are running by yourself. Next time, I will have a headlamp and all will be good. Also a porta pottie at 5 K would have been wonderful! We loved the medal, the hot food at the end and we loved watching the little ones run their race!
All in all, a great time!
Thank you to all the volunteers especially the young lady at the 5 K who cheered us in despite her being so cold.
Pros: Great race kit, flat, fun, well marked track.
Cons: Hard to find start line for people new to the race, directions online referenced previous years and weren't very helpful. Map was also unhelpful, it was upside down. Could allow kids to run a but earlier, spent the first 500m worried I would trample a little one.
Monster dash was amazing!! The swag bag fabulous!! Volunteers were amazing and the people were too! Thanks again and see you next year. I plan to do the 10k.
Once again I was blown away by the creativity of this event! The Spooky Mile is a must for any child (or child at heart) to get in the Halloween spirit. I have been to many races and appreciated the attention to detail, value and organization of this event! The free toque alone is amazing, forget about all the other free stuff. I ran the 10 k it's a great course in a the spooooky park and what a treat to run at night. This is one event I would recommend highly.
Great race to do with your kiddies who love Halloween. Lots of things to look at while waiting for the race to begin and great idea to have a loop with a "spooky" forest included for the Spooky Mile. Lots of parking and nice space to run in Sunnybrook park. Looking forward to running it again next year.
This event was really fun.
The route itself was beautiful. I feel like there could have been a few sections with more lighting (or as mentioned as a future change above, for those who didn't bring lights to be able to have them/rent them), as sometimes I worried about running traffic or bikers coming from the opposite direction and not seeing me. Definitely would be a little creepy to run alone when it got pitch black.
I also think that there needed to be more water & porta potties for the 10kers at the half way point, or just beyond.
The atmosphere was great, and the swag bag was one of the best I've received yet! The food at the end was also nice, as the pizza was much needed.
I would do this run again if my group of friends were interested in joining!
My 7 year participated in the Spooky Mile and my
11 year ran the 5km.
I highly recommend this event. It was very well organized and lots of fun.
We will be back next year.
First year I have done this run. I loved it. Our group walked the 5k to just have fun. It was quite dark where we turned around and hard to see people who didn't have lights. Next year we will bring more lights just to see the ground where we are walking. The after food was amazing and the medals were a hit. We will try to bring more people in our group next year. A very fun night was had by all of our group!!
This was my second year doing the 10K and I loved the new course! It was a great run with beautiful scenery. I just wish they would quit advertising beer at the end of the runs - no beer either year :(
I ran the 10k. I am SO GLAD I brought my headlamp. I just tossed in my bag as an afterthought. There were no suggestions to bring any lighting device in the race notes. Even with the full moon, the course was SO DARK! I had to cut my pace back a bit, even with the headlamp, as so many runners did not have any lighting and were difficult to see- as were all of the huge mud patches and tree roots. As a woman running alone- I really did not feel safe in the dark...alone...with hardly anyone around. Volunteers were lacking. One water table (3k/7k) stood alone along the path- with a couple bottles of water on it. There was no one around. I saw families visiting the park helping themselves to the bottles. This water station was empty on my return. If I had known I would have brought my own water. The process to get my kit was very disorganized. I lined up to get my bib, and then I was sent to another line to get my touque. That line also handled last minute registrations- so with 5 people in front of me registering I waited 15 minutes just to get my free swag. There were two volunteers there, but they just let the line grow. Would I do this race again? Maybe...but I would bring a friend to run the dark trails with, bring my own lighting and my own water.
Just did the 10k with Monsterdash. The route was different this year then in 2014, much safer and smoother, mostly even except just few small hills.
This year, there were much less 10k runners than last year. Not a lot of cheers, laugh and inspiring volunteers, unfortunately. Amazing costumes though!!!
I'd say that more course marshalls would be great for this new route along DVP. Once we lost our way, undecided where to turn on the way back, or to do a curve.
Great goodies bag, good food after the finish!
I did the 5k run because I loved the idea of the run, however, the course was very hard to see at night and was on a muddy trail, saw a few people slip on the mud and trip in holes. Overall it was a fun race, just didn't like the physical trail. Looking forward to running the 10k this year!
Was very excited running my first 10k and my son running the 1k. Loved the run and the view. My son loved the atmosphere, as did I. Medals were great at the end. Unfortunately, the path towards the end of the race is very narrow, with debris, rocks and tree roots sticking out of the ground. There was no lighting at this area and I ended up tripping on a drainage pipe, landing on my face and blocking the path. The other racers stopped to assist me which was very nice. I was unable to find any first aid at the finish line despite asking several volunteers. I ended up getting care at Holland Bloorview and was advised to go to the ER.
I realize that the allure is running at night, however, this last bit of the run is dangerous. Despite my injuries, I enjoyed the run.
Great, great race! Awesome energy from everyone, and the costumes were amazing! Definitely running it again this year!
What great cause ...the spooky mile needs more people to run with the kids may be one head and one behind ....Leading person for the spookymile has to be fast as some of those little monster are very competitive...They should be kept safe...not all parents run with their kids.kids should get a medal too...As for 5k lost time as I did not feel safe in the back route..maybe the swag bag should contain a head lamp and maybe the trail should be marked with tape as it goes straight down and runners like to pass one another...Overall good set up in caferteia needed more sitting options...maybe dance music to keep everyone occupitied while waiting..
It's my second year run in Monster Dash and it's gets better every year. All my friends who ran for the first time in this event enjoyed the run and swag gifts. Will run again next year and recommended it all my friends for a fun 5k.
This was such a fun event! Everyone brought great energy and lot's of wonderful giveaways after!
This was my first time running this race. I really enjoyed it but felt that the trail could have been better marked for the 5k as I saw a few people that fell/tripped over the sewage grates. Maybe there could be an announcement before the race that you should walk on the right and let the runners run on the left, especially on the trails. I actually had someone run into me (I'm a slower runner). The indoor after party was nice, especially since it was cold. Great to see almost everyone in costume too! Also, the prize for best solo costume went to the Three Blind Mice..while theirs was a cute costume, i feel it should have gone to one person, not a group, as they were eligible for the group costume.
Wonderful event! Right in the next day I started looking for more runnung events in the area!
There ar ea few things that could have been done better. I mean the course marking after all. The 4 km mark was confusing. At the narrow paths, there were a few other exits or paths that could have been misleading, especially if you cannot see the runner in front of you. I nearly went the wrong exit!

RACE DIRECTOR COMMENTS:
Thanks everyone for supporting and attending the 3rd edition of Monster Dash, which is now Ontario's LARGEST Halloween Run (thanks to Rattle me Bones being cancelled in Ottawa).
Some of you want to see more lights.....but we want you to experience running in the dark! Unlike most other Halloween Runs that take place in the morning, or some Nite Races that are lit up like a Christmas tree....Monster Dash provides the experience of...maybe....something is behind that next corner...or near that tree.....or is sneaking up behind me!
Which is why we advertise this clearly on our website and in all messaging, we will soon provide lights for rent to people who are without them.
Also, this year due to a very last minute change in policy Holland Bloorview decided not to allow BEER at the venue so we apologize for this and promise to "owe" everyone a second brew at the next opportunity. This occurred too late for us to provide an alternative course of action such as giving everyone a beer voucher or coupon to a local establishment.
Regarding the 10km there was a late tweak / adjustment to the course for safety reasons and hence the original plan for KM markers was not accurate so we apologize to everyone for this.
Great race! Lots of fun! The trail was awesome and beautiful (the hill at the end was a bit of a killer though). I would recommend everyone bring a flashlight for this race. It can get really dark by the end of it and can be hard to see the trail.
Fun run. Completed with my son and girlfriend. Edged out at the finish by my 10 year old, he loved beating his dad!
Only complaint was the back stretch of the course, the trail/path needs better maintenance, I'm surprised I only saw 1 person down. Hopefully she wasn’t seriously hurt.
This was my first time and it was a lot of fun for a great cause! But where was the beer??? From the 8k point on we were running just to get that beer at the end :) but we could not find it anywhere!
That was so much fun. Actually, It was my first race so I was little bit nervous. But every staff was kind and some halloween stuffs, racer's amazing costumes made me relieved.
Everything was organized very well. They provided a lot of snacks and race kit. I recommend Monster dash to people who want to race with your family.
Great race, I enjoyed the funny and friendly atmosphere and all the beautiful costumes !!
The food and drinks after the race were also really appreciated !
+ : Lovely Medal :)
It was great race!!
There are many people who worn cool costume.
I was able to enjoy so much!!
This race doth quench my thirst for action and adventure indeed. Thy citizens of Midgard throw a post battle fest the likes of which Valhalla shall praise unto the end of time.
In all seriousness, this is quickly becoming one of my favourite races of the year. A fast course, great costumes and good times had by all. I miss doing the 10k course but a week after a marathon did not think it was a good idea. The 5k course was a lot of fun and very fast.
I looooooove the little mini computers where you can enter your bib number and see your race results. Brilliant! I'll be back next year with friends. This is a party not to be missed.
Great parking for $6.00. Family friendly event. Perhaps have a non-timed event to reduce the urgency of the racers who are concerned about running in the dark and shoving the walkers aside? Back area was quite dark and many people fell while we circled around the buildings. Fruit was tasty but line-ups were long. Great medals and hoodies! Fab volunteers! Good cause. May want to have a group vote for best costumes vs. M/Cs choice-there were so many great costumes this year!
The 5k was terrific! Great course, well organized. Appreciated the water, just at the right time :) Love the medal and hoodie. Also the NB/Kelloggs bag with technical t-shirt! Pizza, snacks and bevvies were much appreciated.
Spooky Mile was a little disappointing. My child was hoping for more opportunities to trick or treat. Consider spreading out the candy to 1 or 2 more stations? Also, would be great to see more costumes/characters, etc. at the start and end of the kids run.
Very well organized, timing, metal and swag distribution, post-party. Would like to have seen much better lighting though, there were a lot of very dark areas along the route. Saw people tripping along the path behind the buildings, I stumbled a few times, and a member of our team twisted their ankle. The lights the volunteers had were not nearly bright enough.
Nice medals for the 10km. The mileage markers were incorrect and it was hard to see the footing (off road) by the end of the race but otherwise ok. Very nice to be able to sit inside before and after the race.
It was a great kids event
Second year doing this race, and sad to say it is probably the last time for us.
Pros - great cause, great atmosphere, some really fun costumes, good race kits and fun medals. Volunteers are great, and everyone is in the Halloween spirit. Plus, pizza at the after party!
Cons - the KM markers were REALLY off, for both the 10km and the 5km run. At one point the route was so poorly indicated that myself and about 15 other runners went the complete wrong way and wound up in the suburbs, adding unnecessary time (and frustration) to our runs. The 10km merge with the 5km meant a lot of slowing down and collisions. Medal collection was a bit messy - I was initially given a 5k medal for the 10k. The after-party had a fun vibe, but it was really aggravating trying to grab a snack after running the 10k - I had to wait behind people who had run the 5, or the Spooky Mile, or were just there for the party, and I was desperate for some replenishment.
Overall, I'm glad I participated again and it can be a fun run, I just found it all to be a bit chaotic for my liking this year.
Fast, and challenging. Lots of twist and turns in the second half of the race. The race starts off with ample sunlight, but turns dark rapidly within the hour. Makes the second part of the race more entertaining, especially with the twisting single track packed dirt trail behind the medical facilities.
Enough race course support, appropriate amount of aid stations, volunteers, and safety cones to mark the way.
Post race was indoors at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab Hospital. Lots of space, warmth and hospitality. There was pizza, fruit, water, chips and pop.
Parking was a hassle to get out of since half the people didn't prepay for their parking, and it became a bottleneck jam at the one exit gate.
Had lots of fun running with a bunch of other ppl all dressed up for Halloween! amazing post-race also :)
My 23 month old daughter and I did the spooky mile last night at monster dash. Event was so well organized but more important was so much fun. She woke up this morning wanting to run more!!!! Congrats to the crew at Goodtimes Running for running a great event but even more so for bringing the love of running to children like you did to my daughter. Can't wait for next year
Definitely a fun race that will likely gain in popularity in the future! Two issues I encountered in the 10k route tonight: everybody must have gone the wrong way at the start as when we hit the 4km mark we had actually only covered 3km so the route here was not clearly marked, and the other problem was our route converging with the 5km path. This was problematic as the path was very dark and narrow, and the 10k runners were having near collisions with the parents and young kids of the 5k who were mostly walking and obstructing the way- frustrating for us and dangerous for the kids.
Overalls though the dash was great; I particularly love the finishers medal and the atmosphere was great!
I signed up for this race specifically for the medal, and what a lovely medal it is! Different medals for the 10k and 5k but both are heavy, feature Miles the mascot monster and are bottle openers.
A fun race, although as others have noted, some sections are quite dark so a flashlight or headlamp is a must.
A bit tough to get out of the hospital parking lot because everyone was exiting at the same time, but aside from that, it was a thoroughly enjoyable night race.
this was awesome and thanks for the gaderade. please mark the path better.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome route! A bit hard to find the trail in the dark, definitely spooky
I really enjoyed this race last year and will be doing it again this year with some friends. Very good turn out of people wearing some great costumes. Lighting on the course could be a bit better but a headlamp worn would do. Food and beer after with prize awards for best costumes. Parking is very close on site as well. Well run event last year, cool medal...looking forward to the event again this year!
Great race. Fun and well organized. Good post race party. One of the best medals ever
The race was a well organized event, no complaints about that but with the uneven terrain, muddy areas and darkness, I managed to roll my ankle, fall badly and suffer a Grade II sprain. Unfortunately, no paramedics around, or volunteers around, I had helpful runners help me up and get me walking again (thank you so much!!!). I hobbled through the finish line, hobbled around and then went home to ice. Unfortunately ended up on crutches which ended my running for the season. It was fun to try for my first time, but since now I have issues with the ankle, I'll be sticking to the pavement runs!
Bad to the Bones gang
Lots of fun ... really enjoyed dressing up and running through the "graveyard" ... and of course ending with a Mill Street Organic!

Loved this race! Well organized, amazing finisher's medal and awesome post-race party!
This was my second time doing this event and I will keep coming back. Great for kids and very cool to see just about everyone in costume. A must do race each year! I look forward to seeing the event continue to grow and become even more fine tuned. Thank you to the cyclists who helped me stay on course. The volunteers having flashlights in some portions of the course helped a great deal to help us find our way.Great work everyone who was involved.
I run at least one race per month and I REALLY enjoyed my experience at Monster Dash 2013... I LOVED all the costumes, free parking was a bonus, not having to run with street traffic was a nice change and this is the first ever after party I actually hung around for... GREAT JOB!!
great fun for the kids
relaxed and fun atmosphere
My second year at this super fun event. Brought along three pals this year and we all agreed this is going to be a yearly ritual. Beautiful grounds and seeing everyone (kids and adults) running in their costumes is just really special. Great swag and food. A few growing pains but any race that gets me on the dance floor has my vote.
This was by far the most FUN race I have run. Great spirit at the race by both runners and volunteers. The only cons were that at times the course was very narrow, so I got stuck behind people and some of the terrain (behind the hospital) was muddy, uneven, dangerous. I nearly rolled my ankle a couple times. The post race party would have been great if it wasn't so crowded. There was nowhere to sit and it was too small of a venue for the number of people, so I just left.
Pros - really fun, lots of costumes and Halloween cheer. The route is actually very nice, bridges and woods. Water stations were convenient. Route was challenging (this could be a pro or con depending on your feelings) with a massive hill that made for a tough climb. Awesome after-party with beer, pizza and fruit and an awards ceremony.
Cons - It gets dark very, very quickly (BRING A LIGHT!) which is fine, but there were stretches without any lights or volunteers, I thought I had gotten myself lost more than once. Also, because of where the route is, parts can be a bit treacherous with mud, debris and rocks (most had volunteers nearby for warnings which was a plus). The last leg of the race is fun and spooky, behind the buildings, but it's also a narrow laneway and merges with the 5k, so I got stuck behind or with people a few times.
Overall, it was really fun and I would do it again (armed with a better headlamp). Hopefully more volunteers will come out next year to make the experience that much better.
I really wanted to LOVE this race, but as this was my 8th race this year, I knew what to expect. Being a night race, I think they should have done a little better at lighting some of the areas that would have been high danger areas (the big hill, and some of the turns once you get behind the hospital at the end).
The volunteers along the route were FANTASTIC!!! It was cold and dark, and they still had smiles on their faces and were cheering you on! They truly made the event!
The only thing that I would highly suggest a change in is the food at the end. I ran the 10k, and by the time we got to the food area, there were crowds everywhere, nowhere to stand or sit, all of the goodie snacks were gone. We waited in line for beer and pizza. The pizza was already gone by the time we got there and they were waiting on more, but it was taking over 20 minutes, so we just left. I would have liked a few healthier options, but they may have just been gone by the time we got there. Remember those 10k runners need the fuel at the end of the run as well, not just the kids and the 5k runners that are already done.
Just because of the chaos at the end, I don't think I'll be doing this run again. It's for a great cause, but I would just like to see it executed a little better.
Great run! I liked the course. Just past Lung Cancer park there is a fork in the pathway... it needed signage or a volunteer. Lots of bananas, apples, granola bars, water, fruit drinks and beer for the adults. Ran out of candy... go figure. Kids will beat you every time. Lol!
Will definitely return next year.
The Spooky Mile was really cute to watch. Bring a headlight. It gets dark really fast. Dress for the weather.
Fun for the whole family
A very well-run and a great fun time for the whole family. This is my first time ever running in any sort of race/marathon and this one met, and exceeded, my expectations.
I was most pleasantly surprised to see EVERYONE running in costume.
Tons of parking.
I'll definitely be back in 2014.
Happy (and) slow runner
I did this race last year mostly as I live in the area and heard alot of buzz in Leaside, despite the awful (horrible) weather it was a super event. Well organized, educated and entertaining volunteers, indoor venue before and after (clean washrooms thank god)....one of the better goodie bags I have seen, maybe a little dark and slippery on the course but with 48hrs of rain before I guess what can you do? I did not see alot of decorations though but suspect the weather was to blame. Amazing cause in Holland Bloorview Kids Hospital.
I was a volunteer at this race and just have to let everyone know how much of a challenge this was!! Only a third of the volunteers who had committed showed up, presumably because of the weather. As a result we were spread about very thin. We tried ort best believe me!! I was thankful I had worn my rubber boots!Kudos to the organiziners for not having a nervous breakdown!!Cathy

I loved the race...especially doing it in the dark, in the rain, in the cold and in costume! Fabulously eerie Halloween experience. And the "dark" beer was appropriate too!
Great event, I'm looking forward to next year.
This was an awesome event! Despite the unfortunately harsh weather conditions we still managed to have a blast. Best post-race food and race kit I have ever received. This is definately going to be an annual event for me and my family! Thanks monster dash :)
Great race! Very challenging and slippery course! Being injured, I chose to walk most of the course! All the volunteers involved in this event were wonderful....cheery, smiley and very encouraging! Great to see on a rainy, cole evening! The after party was dry and cozy! Loved the beer and pizza...I even was able to have a second slice towards the end of the awards ceremony! We purchased race shirts for $10.00 and were very happy little monsters at the end of the event!
Oh, the swag bag rocked!! lots of treats and no tricks!! thanks!! :)
I really enjoyed this race! Despite the terrible weather, my two friends and I had a great time and have already committed to make this an annual tradition! Biggest pros were as follows:
-The hype of the event, Monster Dash did a great job to promote even though this was their first year and we had no idea what to expect
-Easy race kit pick up (and amazing swag bag)
-Very cool idea to run at night and Halloween-themed. Some people really got into this, which was awesome!
Next year I would love to see more of an after party! More music, etc!
AMAZING event, congrats!!
I think you nailed it in your review! I don't think you'd be able to avoid being close to another race (there are so many), just imagine what the Mississauga Marathon organizers thought when they made the Toronto Goodlife the same day. Personally I ran the Monster dash a week after running the Niagara Half Marathon, so I wasn't really expecting my best time, I just wanted to run. My biggest mistake was dressing up as a member of an airport ground crew, with light wands and a reflective vest. Everybody thought I was a race official and kept asking me questions. It was kinda funny though, no one saw the Air Canada on my back. This was my first night race and personally I was scared of tripping, so I held back alittle. This was the only really problem, it was so dark you couldn't see. I nearly ran into a fence on the trail behind the hospital! Still it was a fun time, and the mud puddles reminded me of the Whitby half Marathon in 2010. Maybe when the race grows a bit they'll be able to light the course a little.
hey everyone, THANKS so much for all the feedback, I will invite the Race Director Lisa Doorenspleet to also provide her comments on the "party" aspect of the evening. I was mainly responsible for overseeing the Course (we had 3 managers out there) and the Decorations on the course (we had $1500 worth of scary music, pumpkins, scary monsters and supposedly 12-15 zombies)! We also had over 80 directional signs and fun signage all with reflective tape (donated, thanks to our sponsors). Obviously due to the horrendous weather we had to scramble with a plan B. 90 volunteers did not show up (we can't blame them either), and NO zombies made it (I think water is their achilles heel). Due to the weather we had to re-route runners in both races and skip 2 "spooky" bridges and the scary, dark section of Serena Gundy Park (which had the Ghost Alley and Spider Web). So possibly some local dog owners enjoyed this 750 section, cause no runners were sent through here!
The City of Toronto were really looking for a safe first-year of Monster Dash so we took no chances, unfortunately it meant that each Km Marker was without lights (pumpkins), and we had to scale back alot of the decorations, thankfully the Cemetary of Dead Races worked so well! We also fought hard to avoid everyone having to go back up the "Horrible Hill" and instead use the shorter, easier Serena Gundy Hill and exit onto Rykert Avenue, returning for a pleasant 2km finish back to the hospital, BUT again due to safety reasons we could not get a permit to use these three city streets (we even collected a survey from all the residents on these streets and 100% of them said "YES" we want the route to pass our house). As they say there's always next year!
Good Times Running Inc.
Horrible weather overcome to achieve a great, fun race. Volunteers and coordinators did an amazing job. Lots of good food and drink after too! Family had a great time.
My girlfriend and I had an awesome time at this event. We both signed up as volunteers and I also signed up to run the 5K.
We were assigned to assist with the Spooky Mile which was pretty cool idea and the kids seemed to have a great time.
The 5K run I took part in was really cool; especially getting the chance to run in costume with others.
The course was challenging and a bit scary at times as the weather did not help the situation; however, it just made it more fulfilling crossing the finish line.
The after party was fun with lots of great food and drink available from many of the sponsors.
All in all, weather aside, I had a great time assisting and taking part in this event and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Had a blast last night, i loved the concept and idea behind the run. Getting to dress up if you wished and run the distance you wanted to was great. Also i love that the race was for a great cause.
One of the things i found fitting was that we ran during the beginning of Frakenstorm.
• The swag bag rocked! Lots and lots of treats that will be consumed shortly and useful coupons that will be used within the next month! I think I lost my gloves but they were great while I had them! Also, staff at the race kit pickup was very organized and lots of fun!
• Cemetery of ‘Dead Races’ was pretty funny! We didn’t hang around to check all the tombstones but we had a giggle!!
• Excellent staff and volunteers! Energetic, cheerful and fun!! It was a tough night to stand around outside!!! Kudos to all who braved the elements! The water station for the 5K was extremely fun and the band helped us to dance around to the turn-around and beyond!
• The course was challenging but good! A hill to start and finish…eek! Our headlights really helped us along! The weather caused us to walk a lot but we were there to have fun and not to run a personal best…lots of rain, wind, mud and PUDDLES (Thank goodness I had my Salomon shoes to keep me warm and mostly dry!)!! We met lots of wonderful people on the trails and the after-race…great energy and vibe!!
• Loved the pumpkin km markers and the ‘pumpkin path’ to guide us to the finish (with a Cobs treat)!!!
• Excellent after-party…dry, warm and entertaining! The MC, food stations (pizza, salads and fruit!!!! WOW!) and of course, the BEER! YUMMY!!
• Thanks for the race photos! It was too wet to take pictures along the way…great to have a souvenir of our soggy run. Great idea!!
• Loved the ‘lucky coin’…..it will stay with me as my lucky charm for upcoming races! Very unique!
• We will be back next year for sure! Thanks for the great event!
A great race for the first year! It was great to see people in costumes. A little cold and rainy, but that didn't stop people coming out -- an after you get running, you warm up.
Only concern was the darkness in the park. I should have been more prepared with a headlamp. I'll remember for next year!
Congratulations, Good Times Running!
Red Running Hood
For a first time race, it was well done. The indoor venue really helped due to the weather conditions. Good turnout considering the weather and that it was a night race. Personal lights did not help much with the bad weather and I agree the trail was difficult to see in some spots and the ankle deep mud and leaves made some areas very dangerous for runners who had to slow down. The swag bag was good for locals but for us out of towners the coupons are not valid and will expire prior to us returning to Toronto. Good parking, great volunteers and it was a nice bonus to have your photo taken free as a souvenir before leaving. T-shirt and sweatshirt sales were a nice touch. The medals looked great and I would have paid extra to have a smaller version of the medal vs. the coin as incentive and/or a t-shirt thrown in, but the gloves were a cool touch for the race. There was a bit of confusion over the medals and costumes, and you may want to have a volunteer slap a 1-2-3 sticker on the winners as they come across so there is less debate during the presentations. Could have started slightly earlier for the kids and adults for out of towners. Family friendly. Salads and breads were fantastic and fruit is always great after a run. BTW where was the Hershey's we heard about?? I found no chocolate anywhere? Water station with bottles was not practical and a bit wasteful and too heavy to lug with a costume on. Could not hear the band, most likely due to the weather and the cemetary was a nice touch. Good creative fun, towards a good cause.
I was thoroughly impressed with this run! GREAT ENERGY!!!!!!
Despite the cold rain everyone was lit up with smiles, and it was fantastic seeing so many dressed up!
Awesome course, fabulous volunteers, amazing swag, great cause, tasty treats and you walk away with a goodluck talisman, plus that wonderful accomplished feeling after a 5k or 10k run (especially with the challenging hill at the end)!
I'm definitely in for next year!
Thanks to all the organizers!
Race was a novel intriguing idea that our family Loved ... My 3 daughters and wife were all very excited to get A costume and to see the other costumes... Well organized - food was good... Snag bag very good - just the weather was bad - spooky music on the course with volunteers in crazy costumes would e a nice addition - for the kids running a trick or treat component to the run would be great addition too
Zombie Family Dad
We live around the corner, and our 3 children ran the Spooky Mile. The whole family dressed up, and we saw lots of other families from the neighbourhood.
Thanks, and I expect we'll be back next year!
Wow, what a night! My costume barely survived the torrential storms, but otherwise it was super fantastic out there. I feel bad for the organizers since the weather was beyond bad, not just that evening but all weekend, possibly kept alot of new runners and spectators home. I heard that over 100 volunteers didn't even show up but you would not have noticed because those who were there performed amazingly. The race kit was the best I had ever seen, the venue and indoor post-race perfectly planned, the route was interesting, fun and scary enough despite the weather. I wish I was faster and could have won the coolest medal / beer opener and the finishers coin will be kept in my pocket for good luck until next year!
Back next year with more friends absolutely.
Happy French runner
It was my first 5K run and I really appreciate it !
Runners and volunteers were well costumed and I had a lot of fun to run with sumo wrestler, monster, or zombie!
The race was difficult due to weather conditions, but it was a great challenge to run under the rain and on the mud.
To sum up : great race with a lot of fun !
I was a volunteer as a marshal, so unfortunately I couldn't see the moment of start. It must have been exciting. Hopefully I wanted to be there. Despite it, I saw lots of runners in great costume !!! It was really fun.
And After race, I joined awesome party, there are wonderful food, beer, people and award! I had a great time!
This event was SO much fun and really inspiring to see everyone giving it their all despite the rain. Great route (even with the mud), great swag and well organized. Just an overall amazing vibe, with room to grow. Looking forward to next year!
I desperatly want this race to do well, so I will talk about the positives first.
The 'lucky coin' that is given out as a finisher award is really cool and different then anything else I had recieved before for completing a race. I will be showing this off to my friends and co-workers throughout the week.
The staff were very positive and happy. The poor vounteers at the turn around point and water stations were super cheerful and uplifting despite how crummy the weather was. A+ for all the voluneers out on the course. Water at stations were in bottle form rather then cup, not sure if this was better or worse, it had its pros and cons. As well, there were cool halloween themed stations set up like a pumpkin patch and a graveyard. More of these next year would be awesome. The race packet has toooooons of good stuff in it including free pizza cupons, candies and cliff bars. I have been saying for years that, after you run your race you want to indulge a little bit, not go to the running room and get 20% off. (Maybe some people do but I don't)
An after party with pizza and really really good Amsterdam dark beer was a great surprise. Plus the MC was very entertaining.
Now, when I list the cons, these are more so, I hope, aids for future years as this was the first year the Monster Dash was held and, as with anything, you have to do it a few times to get it right.
The first thing, I doubt can be changed and I'm not sure what I would do to help this, but the run was 2 weeks after the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. There is probabally no better time to run this but I can see a lot of people taking a pass on this run if they completed a full or half marathon. Realisticly I was not 100% running this race, but it was my own fault.
The course was not very well lit, which we were warned of and told to bring a headlamp. This I can forgive, however there were a few sections of course where it was very confusing if I was supposed to turn or stay straight ahead. I almost got lost twice but thankfully, a lucky guess and a little logic kept me on the straight ahead.
There were a few times that I noticed there were cars on the running paths. I truly hope they were vehicles of volunteers and event organizers but it still made me a little nervous at times. Espeically at the end having to run through the entrance to the hospitals parking lot.
The run was a difficult 10k. Take this as you will. Personally I like a challenge so this worked well for me. That being said there was a hill at the begining and end of the course. The begining it was great, all downhill for at least 500 meters and at a pretty good angle. At the end it was quite the challenge to get up and made a good spot to gain or loose ground. Again, take it as you will.
The one thing that I am actually upset about and I hope can be rectified for next year is, on the website, the awards that were to be given out were listed and one of the catagories was 'fastest 3 males and females in costume.' I was very excited about this as I love dressing up and thought I had a legitimate chance at taking one of the top 3 spots. After the run I was informed that the costume catagory would be eliminated as it was too difficult to tell what time people in costume had finished at. I would not have had a problem with this if it had been told to me at the begining of the race or before the race. I am not sure how this problem can be rectified for next year but I really think the 'fastest in costume' catagory is a neat idea and should be kept and moulded to be used next year.
All in all this was a very fun race and a good challenge and I was very happy to be there for its inaugural run. I will be back next year, dressed up in something goofy once again.
Great race, awesome volunteers and post-run party!! GOOOOD food, beer, fun awards and COSTUMES!! Good job everyone! Weather tried to hold us down, but we still had a great time!
