I have run the key west half marathon for three years in a row and it has gotten bigger and better each year. I do think that because there were so many more participants this year they are going to have to find a bigger area for the after festivities, but hey...it's key west! Every place you go it's an after party :-)
Great race and extremely well run! Nothing better after running 13.1 miles than drinking your way down Duval!
I have done this race the past two years. Everything about it is fun. Considering that it pretty much doubled in participants from last year to this year, the organizers did a fantastic job. The course is absolutely beautiful. I loved the out and back course, the after party, and the volunteers.
I appreciate all of the hard work that goes into putting on a half marathon so if one little thing (like the accelerade on course not being my favorite) is not what I like, I think I can get over it :) haha. I carry my own. After all, it's a race in Key West! Always a fun place to be. Great job!!
We're already signed up for next year. You had a nice man at the A1A booth that took our registrations and was very kind.
This was a very fun race and I highly recommend it. Volunteers were awesome, race scenery was spectacular, plenty of water stations, and even street performers for entertainment along the course. January is also a great time of year to get away and go to Key West! Very unique race medal and shirt and the event was well run inspire of some challenges created by area construction. Course is flat so great opportunity for a great race time. Already signed up for the 2015 event!
I travelled from Ohio to run this event as my first half marathon. My mom came down with me. Packet pick up was very disorganized and lots of drinking. There just seemed to be a lot of overall confusion. The course was beautiful but the drink at the water stations was undrinkable. I'm not sure what brand it was. After I crossed the finish, I left. I did not stay for anything. Once I returned home, Key West Half Marathon started advertising for a full marathon in 2014 and even opened registration. They also ran a photo contest. The 2 pictures with the most votes would receive free entry to the distance of their choice. I won and chose the full. How cool to do my first half and full in one year, in the same year?! They then announced there would be no full marathon and I was never contacted regarding my free entry. So I went to Disney this year instead. I would love the opportunity to come back for a full marathon, but felt things were very misleading.
Awesome time at the Key West Half Marathon. Race packet pick up was easy and organized the day before. I didn't go early in the day, knowing it would be crowded then. Race day was beautiful! Couldn't have asked for better weather. The course was scenic, the volunteers were cheerful and attentive. I felt that there were plenty of water stations. I would like to see bigger signs with mile markers, but that's not a big deal. The beer line was long, but I enjoyed the food choices. I highly recommend this race. I am already signed up for next year.
What a fun time! The many volunteers were wonderful. They were all so cheerful and helpful. There were plenty of water stations along the route. I enjoyed the sunrise on the way out and continued to enjoy the view on the way back. Yes, the packet pick up was crowded and confusing but I was done in 15 minutes. I can't wait for next year!! Thank you!
The Key West 1/2 marathon had a few problems this year with road construction and a large turn out for the packet pick-up. I tend to believe this is just growing pains and unavoidable road issues. The people who help out in this event do a wonderful job every year and deserve and round of applause. This was my second running of this event and I look forward to next years 3pete.
My girlfriend and I ran this race together and we enjoyed it. The scenery was nice and the volunteers helpful. I would recommend only paper cups for the aid stations. The start time was wonderful as it allowed us to see the sun coming up over the ocean.
The packet pick up was ok, but crowded and a little disorganized. No big deal. Hal Higdon on hand was a nice bonus.
With over 1,500 runnners more portajohns at the start would be nice. new course needs work at the turnaround. An extra lane would have helped with large volume of runners on the sidewalk.
I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who kept me going on my first ever half marathon! The encouragement and friendly faces kept me smiling all the way to the finish line. We hit a few brick walls along the way but I loved the course and thought the views were amazing. Also, the fact that everyone passed us on their way back with lots of encouragement was an added bonus. I will definitely be better prepared and fitter for my next one!!
Ups and Downs
While we runners appreciate Half Shell stepping into the title sponsor spot and providing a place for packet pickup, the new system was a disaster area. Lines crossing over one another, not enough volunteers, tents atop each other, maps of the new course tucked off to the side -- very disappointing. A little more direction and some simple orange cones saying "Lines start here" for waiver signing, bib pickup and T-shirt pickup would have been easy.
As far as the race, I'm a fan of the new out-and-back course. The previous course, while more "spacious", took you off the island with zero fans, zero interaction and zero view. The new course was better to see people coming and going (especially friends who were also racing) was more convenient to fans and create at least a little bit of a buzz before the finish line. Was also pleased with the number of water stops, but make sure everyone uses paper cups next time.
The area just past the finish line MUST be bigger though. I got over the chip timer and, two steps later, I was in a crowd. Considering how warm it is and how hard you're working, the last thing you want to do is shoulder your way through a five-deep crowd to find your friends and an extra bottle of water or place to sit and stretch.
First Time; can't wait for next year
This was my first time ever running a half marathon. While the registration area wasn't too visible and it took a few different people to send me in the right direction to find the registration area, the race itself was excellent. I was a little disappointed that the race course had changed, but I'm sure that is due to the construction on N. Roosevelt. I'm already looking forward to next year.
Although we enjoyed the race itself and the after race activities, the packet pick-up was the WORST I have encountered in 15 years of racing. The space was much too small for this event, the signage was almost nonexistent, and there we almost no volunteers directing people. It took us almost an hour to pick up our packets. To top it off, when we got back to our car, there was a parking ticket waiting because we were 12 minutes late. Not the best way for Key West to encourage tourism. We will be telling this story for a while.
Same Time Next Year
I was unfortunately not able to finish the run due a medical emergency but I must applaud the race volunteers out on the course who took the best care of me and were professional, quick acting, and caring. I will definitely attend this race again next year and this time, I plan to finish! Thank you to all who helped pulled off this great run and a very special thank you to those who helped me out on a personal level. Key West was a most gracious host city.
Due to the construction, the race route was quite congested around the mile before and after the turn-around. Hopefully that will not be a problem in the future. The finish line area was too congested, and should have more space. The meadals were awesome, the shirts so-so. I did love the race, my 40th half, and first half in the state of Florida! Thanks for a great time.
Edgar, We are surprised at your review. After the 5K will had not only a raffle just for the 5K we had beer, music, food, chip timing, music on the course and everything the Half Marathoner's received except finisher medals, and 15th Anniversary hats for the Half. Since this was your first race you should check out some other 5K and you may change your mind.
Overall I think the race was great. I thought it was well marked and the volunteers were great for the most part. I think a couple more aid stations would have been nice as there were long sections without any. Being that I live here and drive by the construction daily, I don't think having the course along that side of the highway would have been a big deal (I'm not a fan of loops, ha.) but I understand that it isn't the best view for visitors. The runners were my favorite part as I had the opportunity to chat along the way with both locals and visitors. Half Shell and the other vendors were wonderful as well. Thanks, KWHM!
Overall, a very nice race and you can't beat Florida for the flatness. The packet pick up was very crowded and looked disorganized but the line actually moved quickly. My son was one of the lead runners and the volunteers at the end were chatting along the course rather than directing the runners where to go so that was a little frustrating for him. In one instance a spectator had to direct him which way to go. For those like myself who were in the back of the pack, it wasn't an issue because we were just following the people in front of us. Would I do it again? Absolutely!
Today my wife and I went to this event to run our first ever 5k. After preparing for the few weeks and planning a vacation/birthday weekend for this event we were quickly made to feel like second class citizens. Outside of the personal satisfaction of completing the race crossing the finish line was a disappointment. For weeks we heard of all the great things going on after a race. Unfortunately at this race they only celebrate the accomplishments of the half marathon runners. Many of us running the 5k were first time runners. The end of the race met us with a bottle of water and a two hour wait. None of the post race activities did not start until the half marathoners finished. When they finally begin the raffles and other activities they start with the half marathoners. Maybe in the future when I run a 1/2 marathon ill come back to key west. I would not recommend this to any 5k runners.
