Friendly Massey Marathon
2016 marks the 40th anniversary of the running of the “Friendly Massey Marathon” highlighted by our new
5K event. We also have full, half and 10k races. We generally have about 200 runners.
Norm Patenaude is the
Founder of the Friendly Massey Marathon and the creator of the modern course measurement system. Norm
was also one of the founders of the Ontario Roadrunners Association, and helped write the standards used for
race accreditation, which have since been adopted by the CTFA and the OTFA.
The run occurs along the scenic
Spanish River. The full marathon is two loops of the course. The course is primarily flat, fast and mostly
shaded. The course is normally cool and dry with average temperatures ranging from 14C-20C. It is a certified
qualifier for the Boston Marathon with 20% of runners in the last 3 years achieving the qualifying standards.
The race has also earned an AAA accreditation from Athletics Ontario.
All runners receive a tech shirt,
breakfast tickets and finisher medals. The top three, and each age group winner in the three longer races will
win our unique milking stools. Massey is home to the Chutes Provincial Park which provides camping, walking
trails and spectacular scenery. We have 1K and 2K fun runs on the Saturday for future marathoners. Saturday
night we have a spaghetti supper and Sunday morning a pancake and sausage breakfast.
