Chicago By Don Allison
For Active.com

I’ve never really understood the attraction of the so-called “mega” marathons, those 26-mile moving masses of humanity that snake through city streets. Sure, there’ a lot of energy and excitement, but when you get to the running part, where is the fun? Waiting for hours before the start? Standing in a long line for a porta-john? Battling your way to the start and then wiggling around dozens of runners every time you try to pick up the pace? Negotiating a forest of arms and legs just to get a drink at an aid station?

Note: Special thanks to Don Allison for this article. Don has been a friend of MyNextRace.com for some time now and has shared a booth with us in Boston for the last 2 years.

Chicago 'WE WERE VERY PROACTIVE' | Defend decision to end race, say they took extra steps to prepare for heat -- but runners angry at lack of liquids as over 300 needed care

October 9, 2007

BY JIM RITTER AND LISA DONOVAN Staff Reporters

Running in Sunday's overheated Chicago Marathon, Robin Gault didn't get any water until mile six or Gatorade until mile 10.

And like thousands of other runners, she wasn't allowed to finish.

Chicago Here's a little race summary:

Race day was nice-- not too hot but it was quite windy and got worse as the race went on. I had spoken with Luke Humphries before the race (Hanson's guy) and one of their runners was going through in 1:08 for the half (Eric Hartmark) which was perfect. There was a pack of 5 of us including meself, Matt Levassieur, Hartmark, Humphries and f-ing Raymer! We cruised through the half bang on in around 1:08:10, and I felt solid at this point. Once the rabbit dropped out, Humphries and I started trading leads and we quickly shed the rest of the pack (all DNFs I think).
Note: By Matt McInnis. Matt trains with the U of T Track Club and has now run both of his marathons under 2:20, the first in Ottawa this past spring, where he was top Canadian. He is a full-time resident in Medical School....
