International Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games

Note: It seems people liked actually getting the emails, so the plan now is that I will send the email without pictures and to see the pictures (if you want), go to ww.athens.jacdesign.com. Sorry about the changes!

Today was a long and tough day for me. It started very early as I caught a shuttle out to the triathlon venue (located about an hour from where I'm staying), saw the women's triathlon, took a long bus back, ate, worked from 3pm to 1am, took a bus back to our house, watched a bit more Olympics and called it a night. It was both an
exciting day and a very depressing one. The excitement came from the triathlon and its amazing venue and the exciting sprint finish.

International Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games

The Games are in full-swing and the last two days have gone by in a blur. At the Canadian Team administration office, things are getting very busy again as athletes are moving out and athletes who competed at offsite venues are moving into the village to enjoy the lifestyle and partake in the closing ceremonies. There is quite a contrast right now between those athletes still competing and those who have finished their events. Coordinating all of these moves is quite a challenge and has made the work more exciting and fun with the main challenge being to keep the athletes who are finished from bothering those whose events are still to come.

International Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games

The second weekend of the Games has come and gone. As you know, things are finally picking up for Canada in terms of medals and performance. Exciting stuff! Medals are coming in; many top 8's are happening and lots of potential in the coming week. Watch for wrestling, diving, triathlon and gymnastics. Around here the mood has improved considerably in the past couple of days.

International Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games

Tonight the 'big show' of the Olympic Games started. Commonly referred to as 'track and field', the 9 days of athletics events draws the largest crowds of the Games and includes its highest profile events. From these events come Olympic champions who are crowned the 'Worlds Greatest Athletes" (decathlon/heptathlon) and the 'World's Fastest Man/Woman" (100m dash).

**POSTED AT www.athens.jacdesign.com**
Two more memorable days in Athens have come and gone. It is unbelievable how fast the time passes by and once again I managed to miss a post. I apologize and the only excuse I can offer is that between working, seeing events, meeting athletes and exploring Athens, I simply just lost track of time.

International The first weekend of the Olympic Games was a wonderful experience for a first-time spectator like me. Through the accreditation I am very fortunate to have; I have access to the Aquatics, Athletics and Triathlon venues. To my surprise, I recently discovered that aquatics accreditation doesn’t simply incorporate swimming, it also includes Diving, Water-Polo and Synchronized Swimming – all sports I’ve never before seen live.

International Today’s entry comprises two anecdotal stories, one sport related and one administration related. Judging from how ambush marketing was received, I think you’ll find them interesting.

International If you read yesterday, you know that I was privy to an incredible experience last night when I walked with the Canadian Team into the Olympic Stadium as part of the Opening Ceremonies. I was prouder to be Canadian than I’d ever been before. As we walked through the tunnel leading to the stadium, you could hear the incredible roar of the crowd and gradually see, with each passing step, more and more of the packed stadium.
