When Fiona McMillin traveled to the Marine Corps Marathon several weeks ago, she never imagined that she was about to unleash a tempest. The 47-year-old resident of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and 9-time marathoner (best of 3:47) simply wanted to cheer for some marathon friends. But what McMillin saw at the MCM's 10-mile-mark turned her stomach, and she didn't waste any time telling newspapers, Web sites, and Internet message boards about it.

Victoria's Melanie McQuaid has won the women's portion of the Nissan Xterra World Championships triathlon in Maui. McQuaid, a five-year Xterra veteran, finished in three hours seven minutes 16 seconds Sunday for her second Maui Xterra win in three years. Switzerland's Sibylle Matter followed about 45 seconds later. Nicolas LeBrun of France won the men's race in 2:38:19. LeBrun, 32, also won the Xterra races in Austria and Germany this year. Runner-up Eneko Llanos of Spain finished some three minutes after LeBrun. McQuaid and LeBrun each won $25,000 US in prize money. With the recent death of a 36 year old man at the Toronto Marathon, you may be wondering if intense sport is so dangerous that you are safer staying home on the couch. According to a recent "News Indepth" article at CBC, running (and other high intensity sports) may be getting a bad rap. From the article: "being in top physical shape won't necessarily protect you from heart disease", and "runners should not get the impression that their elevated fitness levels mean they don't have to worry about heart disease ", but "Runners are more at risk while they are out running - especially if they're running a marathon. But for the rest of the day, their risk of keeling over is much lower than the general population." Bottom line: a study of the London Marathon "found that the risk of death in the London marathon was one in 67,414 - "a risk which is comparable to many daily activities.""
