This Foundation has a unique funding model: Event costs are covered by event registration fees and corporate sponsors: Volunteers are the power behind the event. This unusual model allows for 100% of donations to flow directly to childhood cancer charities supported, including research, transition and survivorship and transition and research.

Today, is really a tribute to the riders in my group 2. As you may be aware from reading the website, there are three groups of riders, and my group is officially named, ‘Group Two’. Group 1 is comprised of riders who ride speeds of approximately 30-31 km’s per hour, and are very experienced riders — generally riders who have more than 10 years experience behind them. These young bucks are fast, experienced and have been a great asset to all of us through training.

Today is the beginning of the next 20 days. I have mixed feelings as myself and my team arrive at Kipps Beach in Vancouver for the ceremonious wheel dipping in the Pacific Ocean. 19 days later, I am one of the hopefuls that will dip my wheel in the Atlantic Ocean in Halifax. I feel I am trained. I feel I am ready, but still there are butterflies in my stomach.

I arrived in Vancouver on May 30th, 2008 where I met up with 47 other National Riders and 40 National Volunteers. With each flight that arrived over the four day period between May 29th and June 1, it was clear that this is to be a great adventure. National Riders and Volunteers were arriving from all across Canada, some English-speaking and some French-speaking — ranging from 17 to sixty years of young, 40% women, and 60% men.

A foreigner has not won the Giro d'Italia in 12 years and it has been even more, 15 years, since the last Spanish winner claimed the maglia rosa. However, 25 year-old Alberto Contador, winner of the 2007 Tour de France, put a Spanish twist into the normally Italian affair.
