 Jeremy Deere made it a perfect decade in the past 10 Forzani's Mother's Day walk and run road events.
The Calgary runner amazingly won his 10th straight 10-km race yesterday, despite feeling before the race his streak might come to an end.
"This year, I had a lot of doubt in my mind," said Deer, 31, who finished the route through downtown Calgary in 31 minutes, 11 seconds.
"I've got a family, a full-time job, I'm opening a new running store, so life has been very busy."
The store, called Strides Running, is set to open in July at Marda Loop.
With Deere on a nine-race win streak, race organizers heard about a few runners who were out to take his crown. That didn't happen.
"I heard rumours there were a couple of runners coming in to challenge Jeremy but ... it wasn't even close," said Todd Birss, who helped stage the event.
Adrian Lambert finished second, 35 secnods behind Deere, while Matt Sheffield took third in 32.00 as neither could catch Deere, whose first competitive race was the Forzani's, back in 1989.
In the women's 10-km event, Edmonton's Aster Demissie successfully defended last year's title, finishing in 34.04 and beating Calgary's Lisa Harvey for the second straight time.
Harvery was more than a minute behind Demissie.
Coming in Harvey knew Demissie, who is originally from Ethiopia, was the woman to beat and, through the first six km of the race, she had Demissie in her sights.
"I could see her just ahead of me and when we turned around at the top, she saw me and she knew I was kind of close, then she just turned on the gas," said Harvey, 36, who has run in the Forzani's since 1988.
"Before the race I was thinking I'm going to try my best to try and catch her and give it a go but Ethiopians are good runners.
"They're the best in the world, so I know I'm up against somebody's who's probably done a lot of running their whole life."
Lindsay McLaren finished third.
More than 11,500 people took part in this year's event, the 29th annual, which raised money for the Calgary Health Trust in support of the Natal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and Special Care Nurseries in the Calgary Health Region.
