About the Performers

Lighthouse

Between 1969 and 1974 LIGHTHOUSE won four prestigious Juno awards as Canada's best rock band and released nine albums that reached gold and platinum status containing such hits as Sunny Days, Hats Off to the Stranger, Pretty Lady, and One Fine Morning. Fusing rock, jazz and classical influences, LIGHTHOUSE thrilled audiences with its unique blend of hard driving rhythms, exciting jazz improvisations, and soaring orchestral arrangements.

LIGHTHOUSE performed at all the major halls including Carnegie Hall and the Fillmores East and West, and were featured at rock festivals around the world. They originated the cross-Canada rock tour, playing every major and minor venue across the country.

After disbanding for eight years LIGHTHOUSE reunited in 1982 for a weekend of concerts at Ontario Place performing before 35,000 cheering fans. LIGHTHOUSE is back with a ten member line-up that features original founding members, Skip Prokop (drums), Paul Hoffert (keyboards), and Ralph Cole (guitar) with Doug Moore (bass), Don Paulton (keyboards) and Dan Clancy (lead vocals) rounding off the nucleus; originals Russ Little (trombone) and Steve Kennedy (tenor sax) with Simon Wallis (bari sax) and Rick Waychesko (trumpet) completing the horn section.

The energy and richness of the instrumentals and vocals still combine to make LIGHTHOUSE one of the most exciting acts ever to hit the stage and they're looking forward to sharing that sound with you at the STWM Friday night free concert.

David Rudder:

The history of calypso music will undoubtedly document the talented works of one of its most prolific singer/songwriters ever. This performer has made an indelible mark upon the music industry and earned the respect, some grudgingly, of all those involved. His songs have been described as prophetic, in-depth, charismatic, electric and immortal.

It's hard to remember when calypso had seen more controversy, excitement and popularity than the day David Michael Rudder stepped beyond his role as lead singer for the brass band Charlie's Roots and entered the calypso arena as an individual artist. Breaking traditional barriers, defying the odds, eschewing doomsday predictions of failure by established critics, Rudder charted a course to international stardom for others to follow.

"Not since the early days of the Mighty Sparrow has a calypsonian been able to sell out his every performance in a country that is not prone to personality cults....."
— Jan Murray, The Observer (London)

"Rudder has refused to turn his back on the great calypso tradition he has inherited, but the measure of his art is how he has remained unconfined by that tradition, yet secure in the foundation."
— Trinidad Express
