TORONTO. August 31st. Ethiopians Tirfi Beyene Tsegaye and Firehiwot Dado have been confirmed to start the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday, September 26th, and lead an assault on the Canadian All-comers marathon record for women. That mark, of 2:26:01, was set by Roumania’s Lidia Simon at the World Championships in Edmonton in 2001.![]() ![]() Note: Photos by Victah Sailer.

Eric Gillis, a 2008 Olympic 10,000-meter runner for Canada, will do the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on September 26. Gillis, now 30, made his marathon debut in Houston in January and ran 2:13:52.

Laurent Fignon, the youngest winner of the Tour de France in half a century when he finished with the yellow jersey in 1983, has died, according to a report in Reuters.

David Rudisha of Kenya broke the 800 metres world record for the second time in a week when he established a new mark of 1min 41.01sec at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy on Sunday.

Defending champion Kenneth Mungara and 2006 champion Daniel Rono are confirmed to highlight what organizers hope will be another record-setting race at the 2010 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on September 26th. It is an IAAF Silver Label race. Mungara also won in 2008 and is hoping for a 3-peat performance. ![]()

After finishing her first half-marathon in 2003, Kathryn Garrett decided her follow-up goal wasn’t to improve her time or complete the full 42-kilometre distance. Instead, the 44-year-old from Toronto wanted to help other runners reach the finish line.
